Second Reading Question Two

Filed under: Uncategorized — krysta @ 9:23 pm

Percy’s essay does emphasize that there is a loss that occurs in more than one instance with the situation of traveling and sight seeing. Most people go to their foreign destination on a vacation and have a preconceived notion of what to expect. When they arrive at their destination they are then walking in a “planned” direction instead of taking the trip into their own hands and wanting to create their own perspective. We are feeling a loss of what could be an amazing adventure. This is only possible if we present ourselves to the situation with the right mindset and goal of appreciating the beauty of the many differences in the world.

  1. I agree, the right mindset is the way to go but how do we get the right mindset? I have no idea, i like your banana page

  2. Dear Krysta,

I love your blog. I got the exact same concept as you. But I bet that if we told that to Percy he would be very dissappointed because we both got the preformed complex presented by him. So by writing his essay and expecting people to get the point that he wants people to get, Percy is being a major hypocrite. Therefore, I can’t really take his points seriously.

    That’s all.
p.s. I’m still really jealous of your banana smoothie background.

    Love, Rachel

  3. Explain this concept of “planned” direction a bit more -it is a generative way to conceptualize Percy’s ideas. Also, what is the relationship between the tourist and the student?

  5. I was trying to portray the concept of a “planned” direction as when a tourist goes to a foreign place, and only hits the popular attractions. I believe these popular places should be sought after as an object of sight seeing, but there also needs to be some unplanned activity. The unplanned activity will lead to the “it” of the journey, and will also create a new appreciation for what the alternative sight seeing locations have to offer.

  6. I like what you said about the planned trips… it reminded me of that full house where danny plans out their whole vacation, but then they get stuck on an island and trouble ensues. Anyway, you put it nicely.

  7. I agree completely the right mindset is what is most important when doing anything not just sightseeing. Just think about how much fun you have doing your favorite thing when you are in a bad mood. Your mind is how you view the world without the right mindset you can not see anything as beautiful.
